Dr. Sophia Hines

Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory
I am a paleoceanographer interested in glacial-interglacial climate change and the role of the ocean in major climate transitions.
I am a Lamont Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, working with Sidney Hemming and Steve Goldstein. I am reconstructing past ocean circulation in the Cape Basin using sediments collected on IODP Expedition 361.

During graduate school, I worked with Jess Adkins, John Eiler, and Andrew Thompson at Caltech. I combined precise geochemical measurements on fossil deep-sea corals with simple physical models of the ocean in order to understand changes in ocean circulation in the past.

My research incorporates our current understanding of modern ocean physics as a basis for interpreting geochemical tracers.
